Book Review: Case Closed Vol. #2

Book: Case Closed volume #2 (chapters #10-19) by Gosho Aoyama

Description:

(General Description)

High-school mystery fan Shin'ichi Kudo is actually one of his high school's best minds, but he gets his reality checks from his childhood friend and almost-girlfriend Ran Mori. Nothing can keep Shin'ichi from a case, until he follows a suspicious man into a park, is accosted from behind and fed a strange chemical which renders him unconscious. When he awakens, he has been transformed into a puny grade schooler!

The hapless boy finds a home with eccentric inventor Professor Agasa, who searches for a cure for his condition. While he's waiting to be restored to his adolescence, Shin'inchi takes on the name Conan Edogawa (borrowed from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and the last name of the famous Japanese mystery writer Edogawa Ranpo). As Conan, he plays the part of the little brother that Ran never had, and helps her incompetent private-detective father solve all of the gruesome murder mysteries that come their way.

My Review:

The second volume was a fun and quick read. I thought it was funny when Conan ends up enrolled in elementary school (despite being a high school student) because that's the last place he wants to be stuck in. There were three mysteries this time and they are:

The first mystery focused on the murder of man whose body was found in a celebrational bonfire. This one had Conan trying to figure it out because the prime suspect had a perfect alibi.

The second mystery focused on a missing man. I would say out of the three mysteries, Conan really had to work on this one because it wasn't just simple missing person case. This case also had a connection to the mysterious men who caused his de-aging.

The third mystery focused on a haunted house. Conan and some of his elementary school friends decided to investigate a creepy abandoned house. This one had a Scooby-Doo feel to it.

I think the writer has a good way of balancing the humor and serious tones of the book and I also really like the illustrations. This is a good little series, it just has me wonder what's going to happen next for Conan.

I can't wait to read Vol. #3.
