Book Review for Book Girl Read-a-thon: Twenties Girl

Book: Twenties Girl by Sophie Kinsella

Rating: 3 stars

Review:

I thought this was good but perhaps not as good as Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series and I also felt like it was longer than it should have been. It just felt like some scenes went on longer than they should have and there were some that should have been left out entirely.

In the beginning of this story the reader is introduced to a pathetic Lara Lington, who was part owner of a stress inducing headhunting business. It was stressful because her flaky business partner just took off and left Lara to run their business. I found Lara to also a bit of a doormat as well.

She was also going through a breakup and despite being dumped by her boyfriend she refuses to give up trying to get him back. The guy actually changed his phone number and told her parents because she wouldn't stop texting him.

Lara was very pathetic because she was lying to her family about her career and finances (she's broke) and was delusional thinking her ex-boyfriend Josh was still in love with her.

It wasn't until she attended her great-aunt Sadie Lancaster's funeral when her life started to change. She found out she was the only one in the room who could see the ghost of a young woman, who Lara at first thought was a hallucination brought on by stress. The first thing that ghost got Lara to do was to stop the funeral otherwise her body was going to be cremated. She found out that the ghost was her great-aunt Sadie whose spirit couldn't rest without her missing necklace.

This was a lighthearted pseudo-mystery book where the two main characters help each other out while trying to find the lost necklace. Something that sort of annoyed me about both Lara and Sadie, they were both self-centered and stubborn which they continuously accused each of other being.

There were a lot of scenes where I just wanted to tell Lara to get over her boring jerky ex Josh because I felt like the story focused too much on this side story of her trying to get back together with him. Of course there was a potential love interest Ed, who in the beginning doesn't quite get along with Lara. Sadie is the reason they met in the first place.

Despite Sadie being self-centered and ungrateful at times (the same goes for Lara),  I found Sadie to be more interesting than Lara. Even though she was a ghost, Sadie had more life in her than Lara ever really had.

I still think this was a good book just a bit too long.
