Book 6 Review for the my Library Read-a-thon: Dying to Call You

Book: Dying to Call You (A Dead-End Mystery book #3) by Elaine Viets

Rating: 4 stars

Review:

I thought this was great, it was funny and well written with a lot of crazy interesting characters. The only thing I didn't really like, was it seemed like the main character Helen Hawthorne fell instantly in love with the mysterious Phil. In this book she finally met her neighbor the elusive Phil whom she thought was just a pothead but turns out he was a private investigator who was undercover for an assignment. I'm glad Phil seems like a good guy but it was just too soon for the insta-love, I was hoping for a bit more time for their relationship to build.

Anyway, the mystery found Helen, who was working as a telemarketer, overhearing a woman being killed. After the police didn't believe her, since they checked out the home of the guy that Helen had called and found no evidence to her claim. And since she was pretty much treated as if she was crazy, knowing she definitely wasn't going to get anymore help from them, she decided to do a little investigating. Especially since she knew what she heard.

While investigating, Helen found herself into the dirty little secret world of the rich and famous where salacious and charity parties go hand in hand. She also got additional investigating help from the victim's sister, Savannah who was a bit of a loose cannon.

There was also a side story that had Helen and her land lady Margery dealing with two annoying new tenets who turn out to be not quite what they seemed. The end result was really funny with they way the chased them away.

This was a funny, over the top book and a quick weekend read. I like this series because despite Helen being on the run from her ex-husband she just can't sit back and not help, even if it might get her into trouble.
