Book Review: Veronica #1: Veronica in Paris

Book: Veronica issue #1 (Veronica in Paris - 1989)

Rating: 4 stars

Review:

I thought this was a really cute and fun story that had Veronica possible falling in love (with someone that was not Archie) and finding herself in the middle of a crime adventure.

In the first part, of this four part story Veronica Lodge was out sightseeing and going shopping with her mother as she enjoyed herself in Paris, France. However, while Veronica was in one store, Jaques Girard, a jewel thief who was trying to get away from the police, placed a box that had a bottle of stolen diamonds in it unknowingly in her purse. He planned on getting it back later once she went back to her hotel room.

With that decided, Girard pulled the fire alarm to get the Lodges and everyone else out of the hotel so he could grab the jewels. Unfortunately for him, the bottle he placed in her purse was identical to the perfume Veronica had bought earlier. So without knowing it, he grabbed the wrong box but not without trashing her hotel room.

The second part had Veronica trying to get over what happened with her room by getting to know Jean-Paul Bardet the handsome and suave son of one of Mr. Lodge's Paris business associates. All while Veronica and Jean-Paul were touring the city, the thief was trying his best to get that bottle of perfume from her. However, since he was unable to grab the jewels he had to come up with another plan to retrieve them.

And in part three that's exactly what he set out to do. Veronica and Jean-Paul continued getting to know each other by going out to dinner and a night club. Meanwhile, Girard with a plan to abduct Veronica so he could gain the jewels, had two criminal associates follow them, then try to abduct her at some point in the evening. However, the plan still didn't work out for him, because as soon as the two crooks even tried to grab Veronica, Jean-Paul thinking they were out to rob them fought them off. And as soon as those two slinked away, Veronica and Jean-Paul were approached by someone asking questions.

Which leads to the last and final part of the story, the person who approached them turned out to be Interpol with a plan to finally capture the jewel thief with a little help from Veronica, that is. They plan to use Veronica to lure the thief to the Eiffel Tower to capture him. She agrees to do it, but her reason for agreeing was with typical Veronica reasoning.

The plan worked with some additional help from Jean-Paul, but even with that wonderful result, things didn't quite work out for Veronica and Jean-Paul at the end. With no more need to be in Paris, the family headed back to Riverdale and with Veronica leaving with a broken heart.

This was a really fun read. It had fashion, romance, action and adventure. For a comic book, they actually did a really good job of giving the reader a really good brief history of Paris as well as showing a lovely tour of the city. This was such a nice story.
