Book: The Nutmeg Princess by Richardo Keens-Douglas with illustrations by Annouchka Galouchko

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Description:

A powerful modern fable about friendship, faith, and the nature of beauty.

Best friends Aglo and Petal live on a small island in the Caribbean called the Isle of Spice (based on Grenada). When Petite Mama tells them the story of a mysterious nutmeg princess whom only she has seen, Aglo and Petal decide they must go and find the elusive princess themselves.

The beautiful princess appears, but Aglo is the only one who can see her. As the rest of the village rushes up the mountain in the hopes of acquiring the princess's riches, Aglo and Petal learn that greed and selfishness aren't rewarded, and they receive an unexpected reward of their own -- the knowledge that true riches come from experiencing beauty and selflessness.

Review:

This was a charming little story and even though at times the artwork (although rather beautiful) didn't quite fit the story at times. The story centered around a small island in the Caribbean where two children Aglo and Petal were curious and wanted to find out more about The Nutmeg Princess.

So, one day they go up to the mountain and asked Petite Mama who is the town's secluded resident about the Nutmeg Princess. She told them if they go down to the lake at a certain time, they would be able to see the princess.

I thought the story read as a folk tale and I thought it was wonderful. However, the artwork I have mixed feeling about, because I really don't think it fit the story at all a majority of the time.

I would say this story is wonderful tale of friendship and trust for children but I'm still not so sure about the artwork but I do like the cover art.
