Book Review: Slices of Life (Cook Book)

Book: Slices of Life: A Food Writer Cooks Through Many a Conundrum by Leah Eskin

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: March 25, 2014

Description:

Bad Haircut Kale Chips. Post-ER Roast Chicken. New Baby Risotto. Frantic Dinner-Party Calming Soup. These are some of the dishes that food writer Leah Eskin has turned out during her years of raising two children, enduring one dog, and tending her marriage. She's also nurtured her ten-year-old food column, "Home on the Range," providing a recipe and accompanying vignette in the Chicago Tribune every week. Slices of Life transforms those columns into a memoir that readers can savor in small or large bites. It's a compilation of more than 200 recipes, with a generous helping of the life stories that happened along the way: moving-day potatoes, summer-vacation apricot pie, dead-microwave ratatouille, sullen-child oatmeal squares. Whether preparing recipes for disaster or delight, Leah Eskin has made it all delicious!

Review:

Slices of Life gives readers a glimpse in the life of the author through essays that are followed by recipes. I have to say that I love the essays, they were quite clever and witty and sometimes whimsical like one of my favorite essay the "Starry Night". Another favorite is the adorable "How to Succeed" which described her daughter being a total fangirl over Daniel Radcliffe when he starred in "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying".

I thought the recipes seem fairly easy to do, there was a good mixture of main dishes, sides, beverages and desserts. Although I'm a foodie, I'm a baking novice but I did try the "Dinosaur Pumpkin Muffins" recipe. They turned out pretty well (see pictures below) and they taste really good too.

What I like about this book is, it's not stuffy nor is it overly complicated (the recipes are easy to follow) and it has a lot of fantastic yet cozy type recipes. I forgot to mention, I like the illustrations that are throughout the book. They were very cute.
