Description:

Little Tommy is not so little any more. He has outgrown his shoes, clothes and bicycle all in one summer! L.T. (as he is now called) longs for a brand new bike, but when his father builds him one from recycled junkyard parts, L.T. is embarrassed to ride it to school. Can he come up with a creative idea that not only gives him a good-as-new bike, but also provides a new fence for his yard… and helps save the planet in the process?

This delightful first book in Tom Noll’s “Trash to Treasure” series, based on events from the author’s own childhood, will inspire young readers to reinvent, repurpose, recreate, reuse and recycle in ways that are both practical and fun.

Review:

The Bicycle Fence is a cute and charming story that shows children how they can be creative in regards to recycling. I also enjoyed the colorful artwork throughout the book.

The story follows L.T. who over the summer out grew everything from his clothes to his bike. And although in his heart L.T. yearned for a new bike, his father who loves to recycle decides to take him to the local junkyard to see what they could find.

L.T. was a little worried about his father's plan because he was just a little embarrassed by his father's rainbow truck with it's recycled multi colored parts. The truck is known around town as the "junkyard truck" which doesn't faze his father at all.

The duo ended up creating a new bike from six other older bikes and with a coat of paint (suggested by his mom) it was like he had a brand new bike.

Feeling proud of his "new" bike, L.T. felt inspired to do something with the leftover bikes and the rest of the family's outgrown bikes. With help from his dad, they created a bicycle fence and used the leftover paint (that he used for his bike). Afterwards, the family had a fun and unique new fence.

I think it's great that these books are out there for kids who maybe interested in recycling. They are inspirational for them to read. At the end of the book is included 15 recycling tips or suggestions.
