Book Review: Still Me

Book: Still Me by Christopher Reeve

Source: Library

Description:

This is the determined, passionate story of one man, a gifted actor and star, and how he and his family came to grips with the kind of devastating, unexplainable shock that fate can bring to any of us.  Chris and Dana Reeve have gathered the will and the spirit to create a new life, one responsive and engaged and focused on the future.

Review:

I was not expecting such a heartwarming, honest, inspiring and personal book. The late Christopher Reeve could have easily wrote this book as a way to garner sympathy or as a way to relive his "glory" days instead he wrote an insightful and sometimes humorous look at his life before and after the tragic accident.

No matter what he was going after in life, be it a role in the school play or rallying to draw more attention towards disability care, he did it with hard work and determination. Which are two things he needed when he had to adjust to his new life as a quadriplegic.

What I found so interesting about this book was how open he was about his life. He chose to share all of that with readers as well as his hope that he along with so many who have spinal cord disabilities will one day be able to walk again.

This book showed that there was more to his life than playing one of the most iconic characters but someone who followed their dream and worked hard to achieve it. And when times got tough he knew that his family were there no matter what but that tragedy also gave him an opportunity to be an advocate to speak for those who are normally not able to be heard. It also lead to him creating the Christopher Reeve Foundation (which is now called the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation).

Still Me is a very well written book.
