Book Review: The Love Dog

Book: The Love Dog by Elsa Watson

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

The Love Dog was told from alternate points of view, Samantha Novak and The Love Dog, Apollo.

This follows Samantha who had recently been fired from her paralegal job and becoming desperate to keep her bills from piling up took a job writing for a tabloid magazine, Telltale. Prior to being fired Sam also co-wrote a blog Unvarnished where they dispelled the fairytale myth of love. On the matter of love, Sam had her heart broken by her ex-fiancé and thought it was her job to tell the truth about love (which was something that she certainly was not looking for). At best she was anti-love.

It was her blog that caught the attention of the tabloid and knew she would be perfect for this upcoming assignment. Sam's first assignment for the magazine was to write four articles about the highly-rated and popular reality show The Love Dog. But how in the world was she going to get any dirt on that show? She found a way by getting a job working as a handler for the star of the show Apollo, The Love Dog.

Because Sam thought the show was fake and was putting a fantasized version of love out to the TV audience she felt like they deserved to know the truth about this show. But after writing her first two articles, her opinion about the show changed as well as she was starting to care more and more about the welfare of Apollo, and it was making it hard for her to continue with wanting to write about the show. She was also started to care about Mason Hall the producer and host of the show. He was so much more than she initially thought he would be, Mason was kind, charming, easy going, handsome and not to mention he was really interested in her.

However, following the publication of her first two articles, Sam was really started to feel awful since the show was starting to take a hit in the ratings and with her growing feelings for Mason it made her feel even more guilty.

Is there a way she can fix this?

This was better than I expected because initially I really wasn't sure what to think when I first started reading Apollo's point of view but surprisingly it really works. From Apollo's POV you get a sense that it's his job to put love out there and he believes he's making a difference with the people he meets. He loves being The Love Dog and it shows.

I thought this was great and I can't help thinking that if I had not gone to the library book sale I would have missed out on finding this wonderful book. The author did a great job with this story and how the characters were shown. This was a good read.
