Book: Black Widow volume #1: The Finely Woven Thread (issues #1-6) by Nathan Edmondson with illustrations and color by Phil Noto

Edition: Single Print Issues

Rating: 5 stars

Review:

I'm really mad at myself for not reading this sooner because this was Amazing! These first six issues show why the Black Widow is the best at what she does.

She has a past that no one would ever want but her past is one of the reasons why she can do so many unthinkable things without giving it a second thought or letting her feelings get in the way.

It's a whirlwind adventure as Natasha Romanoff tries to make amends for her past by taking on private cases (that her lawyer and would be manager Isaiah takes on for her) when she's not working with either S.H.I.E.L.D. or the Avengers.

But in between taking cases, she’s back at her apartment in NYC trying to dissuade a little black cat from “adopting” her. There is no place in her life for attachments, that will only get a spy killed. But as much as she tries to avoid the cat, that doesn’t stop it from worming its way into her heart and home. Besides the cat, Natasha couldn't stop wanting to help her neighbor but trying her best not to. Which makes you wonder if the cold-hearted spy actually does have a heart.

Back to her cases, it's not a surprise that many of them come with problems such as old enemies looking for a payback or she didn’t get full disclosure for who she was helping. However, it was a routine spy assignment from S.H.I.E.L.D. that gave her the most trouble. She was only supposed to find out who was targeting someone at the Ukrainian Embassy but that simple task had her going up against a nearly indestructible monk who was violently taking out his targets.

I can't say which I loved more the writing or the illustrations by Phil Noto, both worked so well together. To paraphrase Mary Jane Watson, this first volume of Black Widow has hit the jackpot. The writing was strong and exciting and the artwork matches perfectly. I look forward to reading the second volume.
