Description:

Wally Fresh, a young layabout living in Brooklyn, has hit a rough patch recently. After the current economic fallout left Wally out of work, he has been struggling to pay his rent and get his life back in order. As a result, he has taken on a new roommate, Barry (a spirit animal from the Spirit World). Together with their next-door neighbor with a deadly past, Valerie, the three now get into just about any trouble they can find.

Cupid’s Arrow finds Wally attempting to relieve his romantic woes by turning to the world of internet dating. He quickly finds the woman who might just be “The One.” However, Valerie has her suspicions. She warns Barry that a serial killer is on the loose, a deadly beauty targeting men in the tri-state area through online dating. Afraid that Wally might be next, Valerie and Barry race against time as they try to solve the mystery of the Marmalade Mangler.

Review:

This first issue follows 20 years old Wally Fresh who is about to go out on a date with Crystal, a young woman he met online. Meanwhile, his roommate Barry, who is a beaver from the Spirit World and his neighbor Valerie waste the evening watching a movie while taking various drugs. In their drugged induced state of mind they got it into their heads that Wally's date might be the serial killer who has been killing men met through online dating.

That leads to those two showing up at the restaurant causing nothing but trouble but in their defense they thought they were protecting their friend. Wally of course was upset but instead of hearing what his friends had to say he yelled at them then took off with Crystal. It does make you wonder that although Crystal was nearly killed due to some throwing stars, she still wanted Wally to leave with her. That doesn't seem quite logical when you look at it. However, Wally was too mad to see that Crystal just might be the serial killer but I guess that's something that may be discussed in the second issue.

The writing wasn't bad but the first issue wasn't that interesting. The characters need to be fleshed out more. I would hope that Valerie and Barry are more than just the druggie comic relief. There has to be more to them than that. Wally can't be so desperate for a date that he missed possible clues that his date just might be a killer.

I'm disappointed with this first issue because it felt as if the writer was trying too hard to be funny instead of providing an interesting story. I was even more disappointed that the main character insult his friends by calling them retards. Seriously, why is that word still being used, that is so not okay.

Hopefully, this issue was just a bad fluke and the rest of the series is actually fun to read.
