Book Review: Sand Chronicles Volume #1

Book: Sand Chronicles Volume #1 by Hinako Ashihara

Rating: 5 stars

My Review:

This two chapter volume focused on Ann Uekus and how her life changed after her parents divorced. The first chapter was about Ann when she was 12 years old and in the second chapter, Ann was 14. This was a very funny book but also rather sad as well. I thought the Sand Chronicles had really interesting, likeable and relatable characters. Nothing felt stagnant because the characters are growing with each chapter.

The story starts with Ann and her mother moving back to her mother's small hometown to live with her grandparents. Initially, Ann wasn't used to small town life because it seemed like everyone knew everyone, she didn't have any friends and she also had to deal with her cranky grandmother. Ann's luck started to change when she ended up meeting a boy named Daigo and getting a part time job along side Daigo cleaning at a home. While working she met the homeowners children, brother and sister Fuji and Shika, whom she became friends with. However, things were not so good at home concerning Ann's mom. Something tragic happened changing Ann's life.

In the second chapter, two years later Ann and her friends are going away for a summer camping trip where she had to deal with a mean girl and she also delved into a little bit of romance. Going away for camp had Ann trying to sort out her feelings for Daigo and a personal health issue. In this chapter you also got a little backstory on one of Ann's friends, Fuji.

This was such a good story, I'm glad I took a chance and read it. I can't wait to read the second volume. I also thought the artwork was really nice.
