Book Review: Gilmore Girls: The Other Side of Summer

Book: The Other Side of Summer (Gilmore Girls book #4) by Helen Pai

Description:

"Why don't they just sew our sides together and rename us Chang and Eng." ~ Paris Geller

It's true. The Chilton gods seem to get great amusement out of putting Paris and me in the same setting, be it academically or socially. And they're also bestowing their evil charms on my mom, who's been told by Headmaster Charleston that she needs to be more involved. So she's working on being a "Chilton mom," and I'm trying to be a "Puff." It hasn't been easy for either of us, especially with the distraction of my debutante ball, the arrival of Luke's nephew, Jess, and Tristin's return to school. What's Harvard?

Review:

Going back to school never brought so many problems for Rory but the new school year was gearing up to be very problematic. From dealing with a difficult Paris for the school paper to being told by the Principal and her Guidance Counselor that she needed to socialize more they felt her lunch time routine wasn't the best. For lunch Rory would put on her headphones and read a book while she enjoyed her meal, they thought she was being anti-social which does not describe Rory at all. But from that one little lunch time activity they wanted her to change things up.

Not happy at all with that, Rory told her mother Lorelai but things didn't work out well for her either, after she spoke with the Principal. She was told as a mother of a Chilton Prep School student she was supposed to be more involved with the school. So they were now both highly recommended to become more social. Rory decided to just go ahead and get involved, she ended up meeting a group of girls who introduced her to the world of a secret sorority which just might get her in trouble at school.

She also had to work with Paris and her two annoying friends Madeline and Louise along with Tristin to put on an act of Romeo and Juliet. The problems continue with Tristin being nearly unreliable because he keeps getting into trouble as well as trying to cause problems between Rory and Dean.

School life wasn't the only things changing for Rory, she decided to honor her Grandmother by being presented at a cotillion. She talked her boyfriend Dean into being her escort and was thrilled that her dad was going to join her on stage.

Her home town of Stars Hollows was also getting a bit of change when Luke's nephew Jess showed up with sort of a bad attitude and causing trouble.

Like the other Gilmore Girls book I read, reading this is just like watching the TV show. Since this book was an adaptation of several episodes I think the author did a good job keeping everyone in character as well as adding additional information to the scenes. This was very well written and fun to read.

Reading this also made me adore Rory even more. As one of my Favorite Fictional Bookworms, she truly lives up to that title because I can't believe she takes extra books with her to school. She takes two to read for her bus rides and one to read for lunch and an extra one for just in case she wants something else to read.

The Gilmore Girls was an interesting and different show and the books that I read were just as good.
