Description:

HINGES is a fantasy webcomic, turned graphic novel, about a doll named Orio and her troubling companion Bauble. New to the city of Cobble, Orio must depend on help where ever she can find it, but her assigned familiar Bauble has other interests. And as the two explore the walls of their city, they find that they are not the only new arrivals. In a place that runs like clockwork, it only takes a little disruption to upend a city.

Review:

I like this, Hinges follows Orio, a doll (or perhaps an animatronic person) who has now been approved to go live in Cobble, a town where dolls who are activated live and work. Orio is also instructed to find a companion or odd as they're called, she decided to go with this cat like creature named Bauble. But Bauble seems to have an ulterior motive for wanting to be selected. To help Orio get used to living in the city, her advisor Alluet will be guiding her until she finds a job and place to live.

Finding work is very difficult because none of the preselected jobs on the list fit Orio. And it doesn't help that Bauble is causing trouble at every place of business. She did find one place that seems perfect for her but it wasn't on the list.

A bit of backstory is shown that makes it seem that perhaps it wasn't Orio time and that Bauble was the reason for her activation. There was also a tense scene near the end where Orio was put in danger because she was trying to help Bauble whose secret was revealed.

This was an interesting book that's filled with beautiful artwork. Since Orio was still getting used to being out in the world, it took a while for her to finally say something. There was also pages where there are no words but the illustrations speaks for itself.

A lovely little book about a unique friendship.
