Book Review: Misery's Way

Book: Misery's Way: A Kit Colbana World Story (Colbana Files book #4.5) by J. C. Daniels

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: Available now

Publisher: Shiloh Walker, Inc.

Description:

Her name is Frankie. At least, that’s what she calls herself.

She looks human, but she’s no more human than she is a faith-healer. That doesn’t stop her from using her…more unique abilities to take care of certain needs. It’s those abilities that lead to a chance encounter with an unusual woman in Florida.

It’s a chance encounter with fate that will set these two down a collision course with destiny.

This short story is loosely connected to the Kit Colbana Files. Can be read as a stand-alone.

Review:

Misery's Way follows Frankie, a human like monster who feeds on the misery and suffering of others. She goes around masquerading as a traveling faith healer to settle her hunger. She heals those who seek her out at the shows but she has to keep from over doing it to ensure she stays just under the radar. Accompanying her is her friend/bodyguard Saleel who is another type of human like monster, however the story doesn't really provide any of the details.

While Frankie was performing her task of healing the sick, she noticed two people who weren't there to be healed. They ended up disrupting her second show leaving Frankie no other choice but to talk to them and see what they wanted. The two beings were, Kit, a supernatural like assassin and her partner Justin, a witch had been sent there to see if Frankie was the one scamming the sick, which of course she was not.

After the predictable angry meeting between the four, Frankie then set about trying to heal Kit who had some kind of left over injury. Frankie also left her with a mysterious gift, like so much in this story the reader of this book will of course have no privy to.

This ends with Frankie deciding it's time to end the faith healer personae she's been going by. This will give her time now to figure out what she will do next. I don't know if this will turn into a full length story for Frankie but if it does then I hope there would be more information given about the character. What little I gathered from the story, Frankie seems like she has an interesting story to tell, it would have been nice if the author did that.

This was so flat and boring, I could barely finish reading it. There was too much telling and not enough showing in this. Even though this is a short story, the writing never really gave me a good sense of who Frankie was. I wanted to know more about this character and all I got were vague snippets. All the characters in this story lacked descriptions and personalities. These could have easily been any characters in any other paranormal book.

Although this is a tie-in with the Kit Colbana series (which I have not read), the story spent too much time focused on Kit and her issues instead of letting the reader know who Frankie is.

Slow moving and not very engaging this story felt like so much of it was missing or left out.
