Art of the Day: Mary Jane Watson

Artwork: Cover art for Web of Spider-Man v2 issue #11 (2010) by Jelena Kevic Djurdjevic

I love this cover because Mary Jane Watson is either looking up at something (maybe Spider-Man) and it's making her smile or she's wistfully thinking about a happy memory.

MJ is another one of my favorite characters and lately she's not getting a lot of fan support especially since the most recent Spider-Man movie that featured Gwen Stacey, has renewed Gwen's popularity among fans. Many of the "new" fans think MJ won't be able to hold a candle to Gwen in the upcoming movie but I think she can if the writer includes all the good things about her.

It also doesn't help that MJ is being written in rather an out of character way in the new Marvel Now Superior Spider-Man series. She's dating "Peter Parker" but it's not really Peter, Doctor Octopus is manipulating Peter's body. Mary Jane should be able to tell if something is off with Peter but the way she's written there doesn't seem to be any signals that she's picked up on yet. It's as if they think she's too pretty to think.

Well, Mary Jane is more than just her looks and people underestimate her because they don't think she can do anything but they end up eating their words. Because this girl is tough and smart. So hopefully she will hold her own on screen if the writer, director and actress do their part to make her amazing as well as the comic book writers remember that MJ is supposed to be smart and should be able to figure out the faux-Peter by now. Perhaps she knows something is up but is in denial and doesn't want to believe it yet, I just wish they would show us that, if it is.
