Book 7 Review for my Library Read-a-thon: The Old Man and The Sea

Book: The Old Man and The Sea by Ernest Hemingway

Rating: 4 1/2 stars

Review:

I found this to be interesting, it's a simple yet beautifully well written story. It centered on an old man who was having a bit of bad luck with trying to catch any fish. So he goes out the next day determined to catch something and he did, a giant marlin which led to the start of his troubles. Once the fish was hooked, it dragged the old man's boat further and further out until he was days away from land.

And when he was finally able to capture the fish, he had the problem of trying to get it and himself back home. But with hungry sharks trying to get his catch he had to figure out how to fight them off. This made me wonder if he was continuing to fight the sharks to keep his catch for himself or to show the others (when he reached home) that he still had what it takes to keep fishing?

The old man's only friend seemed to be a young boy who idolized him as well as looked after the old man as if he was a part of his family.

I can see why this has remained a classic the writing alone is fantastic.
