Book: The Good Lord Bird by James McBride

Review:
I thought this was good but it does deal with the sensitive subject of slavery, racism, religion and equality in a realistic way which at times could be quite harsh but it went with how the times were. The author also injected a dose of humor at times to take away some of the sting of the story.
I found the author did a good job of creating these amazing characters from the crusading abolitionists John Brown to the initially timid former slave Henry.
The story follows young Henry, who for a time had to masquerade as a girl, due to misunderstanding by Brown, as he traveled with John Brown and his misfit band of marauders trying to seek freedom for slaves.
Along the way, Henry met some historical figures, such as Harriet Tubman. This was a very interesting story and many reviews have compared the writing to that Mark Twain and I can see why. The writing has whimsical yet serious take on the world around the characters in the story.
I enjoyed this and it's even has me interested in maybe reading some of the other works by the author.
