Why Are Books Not Promoted Like Movies?

by Book Girl

I was thinking about that question over the weekend. Just this weekend alone I've seen numerous trailers and commercials promoting not only movies in the theater or soon to appear in the theater but also movies that are and will be on DVD/Blu-Ray.

It's understandable why movies receive a lot of promotion just look at how much attention the syfy channel's Sharkando 2 received. Now just imagine a book getting that kind of attention. That would be amazing. I believe the last books to receive that kind of treatment was the Harry Potter series.

Every now and then I do see commercials for a James Patterson book and I have seen a few book trailers on some author's websites. But that is a small percentage compared to movie promotion.

Both movies and books are a great form of entertainment, it would be nice if books were promoted half a much as movies are. If publishing companies could devote a little of their resources to promote just a few books that could bring in even more new readers which would mean even more revenue for them. And let's not forget most businesses are all about the bottom line and books are no exception.

What do you think should books be promoted more?
