Book Review: Camp Midnight

Book: Camp Midnight by Steven T. Seagle with illustrations by Jason Adam Katzenstein

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: Available now

Description:

Reluctant Skye is accidentally sent to the wrong summer camp. Not wanting to please her "step monster," Skye is dead-set on not fitting in. That won't be a problem, as everyone at Camp Midnight-with the exception of fellow camper and fast-friend Mia-is a full-fledged monster! The perfect book for fans of Raina Telgemeier's Smile, but wish it had more bowls of gooey eyeballs.

Review:

Lately, I've lucked up on finding some really good books to read. Camp Midnight follows Skye who really doesn't want to spend the summer with her father Dale. Well she does want to spend time with her father, just not with her step-mother Gayle (or step-monster as Skye prefers to call her). Her time with her father was going to be short-lived because whether she liked it or not she was soon going to be off to camp.

Arriving at the bus drop off, Skye was accidentally put on the wrong bus going to the wrong camp. The kids and bus driver were creepy but thankfully she met a potential new friend Mia. And she also saw a really cute guy. As soon as the bus arrived at the camp, Skye was truly out of her element not to mention that the camp and camp counselors were also rather creepy. Once it became midnight, Skye soon realized that this was not the usual sort of camp. It was filled with all types of monsters, even her crush turned out to be a werewolf.

She was trying her best to fit in or at least not make it obvious that she was human. Trying to be confident didn't keep her from feeling terrified. Something she couldn't figure out was why her friend Mia didn't feel as if she belonged. This was a cute and funny story that dealt with friendship, acceptance, being yourself and learning how to deal with change.

I love this comic book, it's quirky and fun and so are the illustrations. I think Image Comics has a winner here because this really is a wonderful little book. I adore Skye, she's kooky, colorful and totally opinionated. I really do hope there will be another Camp Midnight book, this was a fun read.
