Book Review: Sprinkle With Murder

Book: Sprinkle with Murder (Cupcake Bakery Mystery book #1) by Jenn McKinlay

Edition: Paperback

Rating: 4 stars

Review:

Cupcake bakery owner Melanie Cooper had no idea that agreeing to bake cupcakes for a wedding would lead to her being accused of murder. When her best friend Tate Harper (who is also an investor in her company) hired her to bake 500 cupcakes for his upcoming wedding to fashion designer Christie Stevens, she thought it would be a great opportunity.

As thrilled as she and her other best friend (and employee) Angela "Angie" DeLaura were with having Tate as a client, they both had the opposite reaction towards his fiancée Christie. That's because Christie is demanding, rude and likes to legally strong arm people into indisputable contracts. Melanie found out about the latter during her short meeting with Christie who issued her a contract. The contract would official give all rights to Christie for the cupcakes that Melanie would create for the wedding.

Even knowing that she will lose her creations Mel went ahead with the decision because she knew that it would be good publicity for her business. But things quickly went downhill once she arrived at Christie's design studio and found the designer dead with a cupcake in her hand. It wasn't long before the police started zeroing in on Melanie as the prime suspect.

And being implicated in a murder doesn't bode too well for business especially when she has a competitor taking advantage of the situation. Melanie was not only going to try clear her name by finding the killer but also to save her business.

I enjoyed reading this, it was fast moving, well-written and very engaging. Even though I figured out who the murderer was immediately, that didn't stop me from continuing with the story because the mystery was interesting and so were the characters. Plus I wanted to see if my hunch turned out to be true.

Melanie is an interesting character, she went from being a Marketing executive to going to cooking school to eventually open up her own bakery. I've read so many articles where someone has given up working a corporate job to pursue something they are passionate about. I really like this first book, there's humor, a little bit of romance, friendship, fashion and of course cupcakes.
