"Younger" is My New Favorite TV Show

Update: I had no idea this show was based on the book Younger by Pamela Redmond Satran. I already added it to my wishlist, I can't wait to read it.

I'm always saying you're never too late to find or join a fandom but why am I just now watching Younger? I started watching the first season yesterday OnDemand and so far I absolutely love this show. It's like a cross between two of my other favorite shows Sex and the City and Gilmore Girls with Younger being set in the world of publishing. There is no shortage of authors or books being mentioned and not to mention all the books that are being shown. I'm disappointed that I didn't start watching this series earlier.

But I know why I didn't tune it when the first season originally aired on TV Land. I had heard about the premise being about a 40 year-old-woman pretending to be 26 in order to get a job. I guess after watching so many other shows where women were embracing their age, I was disappointed that this show would focus on a woman who was pretending to be younger.

See had I given the show a chance, I would have seen why Liza Miller (Sutton Foster) had made that decision. Liza is divorced from her husband who not only cheated on her but is also a gambler who left her in a horrible financial situation. With her teenage daughter studying abroad in India, Liza needed to sell her house and find a job, she was hoping to go back to working in publishing. But after a terrible interview at a publishing company where she was seen as old and obsolete, Liza's best friend Maggie (Debi Mazar) suggested that she pretend to be in her 20s after finding out Liza had been hit on by Josh (Nico Tortorella), a 20-something guy when they were at a bar.

With help from Maggie for a more youthful look and a fake ID, Liza was able to get a job as a personal assistant to Diana Trout (Miriam Shor), the head of Marketing at Empirical Press. She immediately becomes friends with Kelsey Peters (Hilary Duff), a junior manager at the publishing company who not only helps Liza with her job but unknowingly becomes her window into the world of the 20-something.

What I like about this show is that it's fun and interesting as Liza tries not to get caught lying about her age while also embracing her newfound life at "26". However, what I don't like is the lack of diversity hopefully that's something that will improve throughout the series especially since the show is already in its fifth season.

I'm so looking forward to getting caught up on all the episodes because I'm sure sooner or later, Liza is going to get caught because you can only lie and pretend for so long before the truth is revealed. I'm not really into binge watching but yesterday I found myself doing exactly that because this show is so good that I just had to watch one more episode.

I am so glad I took a chance on Younger because I would have continued to miss out on a good show. If there is a show you're interest in watching but are reluctant, just watch it. Don't waste any more time putting it off. You never know it might turn out to be your new favorite show or not but at least you gave it a chance.
