In The Devil Wears Prada, Should Andy Have Quit Her Job?

Lately, I have seen several posts or tweets about how Andrea "Andy" Sachs from The Devil Wears Prada should not have quit her job at Runway magazine. I don't see it that way, Andy had changed and not for the better. In both the book and the movie, Andy wanted to be a writer, that was her main reason for moving to New York City. She was a recent college graduate who had dreams of becoming a professional writer but fresh out of college odds are you are not going to get anything close to your dream job.

Getting the junior assistant job at Runway magazine should have been the stepping stone and learning experience she needed to apply for another job. It's been stated that if she can survive working for Editor-in-Chief Miranda Priestly for a year, she can practically get a writing job anywhere.

Initially, Andy wasn't doing too well with her job, she saw the fashion industry as being shallow so she didn't take the job seriously and was not putting much effort into it. But a new perspective and a makeover had turned Andy into an efficient little worker bee. I love that Andy became such a hard worker and showing initiative she proved not only to herself but to Miranda that she was better at the assistant job than any other previous and current employee. However, then things started to change because her job became all-consuming and nothing else mattered.

I do believe Andy lost sight of her dreams and goals in the beginning because being a writer no longer seemed important to her. She had gotten so caught up in the glitz and glam of the fashion industry that she overlooked how terrible Miranda was. However, something changed for Andy, it was the realization that she was turning into Miranda that made her see that was not who she wanted to be. It led Andy to quit her job (which was very dramatic in the book) and even though Andy didn't last a year working for Miranda, she was still headed towards a writing career.

Sometimes it takes a while to reach your goals but you shouldn't lose sight of them in the process. And don't be afraid to quit a job that no longer feels fulfilling or is a negative influence in your life. Which is why I think Andy should have quit her job and even though she learned something from working at Runway it was starting to turn her into someone she didn't want to be.
