Question of the Day: Are Superhero Secret Identities Still Necessary?

I've seen where fans have said that secret identities are a product of a bygone era of comic books but I don't think that's true. I think a secret identity is necessary if a superhero wants to fight crime. It not only keeps them safe but also everyone they love and care for.

Just think about what would happen if it was revealed that Bruce Wayne was Batman. He would be hit with a large number of lawsuits for property damage, injuries, unintentional deaths, etc. and not to mention the villains and criminals going after everything and everyone in Bruce's life. They wouldn't stop until they destroyed him one way or the other. It would truly make it impossible for him to continue to be a hero especially since he has amassed a large number of deadly enemies.

As much as I love the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe), the movies never really showed Tony dealing with any consequences of telling the world he's Iron Man. He would have been sued so many times over and villains would have gone after Pepper Potts on a continuous basis in order to get to Tony and not to mention destroy Stark Industries.

Secret identities may not seem like they are necessary in this day and age where comic books, TV shows and movies reveal the hero's identity as if it's no big deal. However, it is because a secret identity not only provides safety but also allow the hero to have a life away from fighting crime.
