Review:

Black Magick volume #1 is an absolute excellent read, this supernatural mystery follows Portsmouth Police Detective and witch Rowan Black as she encounters several strange incidents surrounding two cases.

The first case involved an intense situation with a guy holding several people hostage in a restaurant in order to get to Detective Black. The only way he would release the hostages was for her to go into the restaurant. Once there, she experienced a weird interaction that had her realizing that he was under some type of spell that had him trying to kill her. The spell was too powerful for Rowan to remove, so when he tried to kill her, the only way she could save herself was to cast a spell. Although the guy died from his murderous attempt, it left Rowan with a lot of questions.

The entire situation was strange and it had her feeling like something bad was starting up again which felt like perfect foreshadowing. She contacted Alex, one of her coven sisters to see if they could figure out what was going on. The strangeness continued when Rowan and her detective partner Morgan Chaffey showed up to a crime scene at the docks where a body was pulled out of the water missing a hand. An autopsy revealed something removed from the body that seemed random, however, Rowan knew it was something connected to the supernatural.

Alex was continuing to look into things supernaturally for Rowan but a malicious spiritual connection may have put her in harms way. Something seems to be targeting Rowan but will she be ready take it on when it arrives.

As I have mentioned above, this was an incredible read. I like that the story was slowly being unfolded while giving the reader hints of an emerging supernatural threat centering around Detective Rowan Black. I love the artwork just look at these panels below from the third issue, it's amazing. From all the details in the illustration to the beautiful colors, the artwork coupled with great writing does a brilliant job of telling the story.

As a disclaimer, due to the subject matter and some of the images this comic book is rated for mature readers. Sorry kiddies this is not a book for you.
