Fashion Meets Fandom: Luke Skywalker's Poncho in Star Wars: A New Hope

Can we discuss Luke Skywalker's poncho from Star Wars: A New Hope.

It's so awful but I feel like it reflects someone who at 19 years old, doesn't have a care in the world aside from trying to get away from his desert planet Tatooine. Luke really doesn't have much of a fashion sense, his best look in A New Hope was the outfit he wore for the medal ceremony. The yellow jacket, black top, brown pants and tall black boots (which I believed he borrowed the entire outfit from Han Solo) felt like the start of his fashion evolution which continued in The Empire Strikes Back with the military style green suit followed by the infamous and stylish black suit in Return of the Jedi.

But back to his less than fashionable poncho, it was simply dreadful. It looks like he's wearing a very unflattering heavy blanket. Maybe there's not a lot of fashionable stores, stalls or vendors on Tatooine, so Luke probably had limited choices of stylish clothes to buy and wear. I was thinking that perhaps this terrible poncho was a gift made by his Aunt Beru Lars. Maybe it was for his birthday or a simple thinking of you gift to make sure he stayed protected from the sun and sand.

However, he got this poncho, it's absolutely terrible. He really seemed like someone who didn't care what he wore, I can't believe he paired a bucket hat with a shapeless poncho. At least his outfit underneath the poncho wasn't bad, it's a simple white long sleeve tunic paired with beige jeans and tall boots. It's the poncho that ruined the look.

At least Luke got another chance to wear a better looking poncho in Return of the Jedi. In that movie, he wore a flattering camouflage poncho while he and the other Rebels were on the planet Endor. Luke looks effortless in his laid-back poncho paired with his perfectly tailored black suit. It's easy to see that as Luke matured so did his sense of fashion.
