What did I think of the Supernatural series finale? I thought it took a different approach going for an emotional ending instead of the standard series ending that I've come to expect with characters in a grand battle fighting the villain. Everything sort of happened how I thought it would with Dean dying and Sam eventually living the life he was probably supposed to have had if his older brother hadn't shown up at his college in the first episode. Sam getting to live out his life and dying at an old age just felt like something normal. And Sam having a normal life, is something that Dean probably would have wanted for his brother in the end.
The finale felt like a quiet ending that many fans were probably not expecting. I think we're so conditioned for the ultimate fight as the ending that seeing something a little normal just seemed unspectacular. I like the normalness of the final episode but if I had wrote it, I would have let both of them get to enjoy a normal life. I would have shown Sam going back to college as a non-traditional student while Dean simply sitting back in a cabin in the woods somewhere enjoying his life most likely eating and watching TV. They have more than earned a normal life after fighting evil for 15 years but Dean's death wasn't unexpected not with how he lived his life. He even said it himself this was always going to be his fate and he didn't want to be brought back another time.
This part of the story was sad and it did feel emotional watching them say goodbye to each other as Dean was dying. It's because you're seeing how close these two have become over the course of the series. The brothers started out being resentful and antagonist towards each other to becoming each other's best friend. That was heartbreaking as well as seeing Sam's reaction later on. But to see how Sam got to have the life he probably would have had was nice and that in the afterlife, Dean was at peace and happy. It would have been nice to have seen Castiel especially since Bobby said Cas helped Jack fix a few things in heaven. So, I guess that means Cas was up there somewhere but it would have been really cool to have had a final moment between Dean and Cas that wasn't sad.
Overall, I kind of figured this would be how the show ended, so I wasn't surprised by it. I've seen a lot of complaints and disappointment from fans about the finale but not every show is going to end the way we what it to. However, I thought there was something very poignant about the ending, it was interesting to see the show go out in such a quiet yet wonderful way.
