I like Abby and despite the great chemistry and connection she had with Buck, their relationship wasn't meant to be. I do wish before Abby left, she had told Buck that it was over so he didn't spend most of the second season pining over her and waiting for her to return. I understand she was going through a tough time after the death of her mother and she wanted to try to find herself with a trip traveling throughout Europe. But at some point, she should have contacted him either by phone or a letter to let him know it was over.
I could see if fans didn't like her because she didn't end things properly with Buck before she left but most of the complaints that I've seen are about her age, how old she is and her looks. Abby's style had a slightly frumpy look and she wore a lot of baggy and slightly retro looking clothes which kind of gave her a dowdy appearance at times. What I like is that this was her style and she wasn't trying change it to make herself more "attractive" because she already was.
We live in a society that's obsessed with youth and treats older women as if they are less attractive and invisible which is why the fan reaction to Abby felt like it was steeped in ageism. No matter what age, men are seen as attractive and getting older doesn't seem to take away their sex appeal while older women are seen as undesirable. What I found interesting is that when Abby returned in a guest appearance at the end of the third season with a fiancé who was around her own age, fans didn't seem to care about all the things they once criticized her for. Which makes me think the criticism wasn't about Abby but that she was dating Buck and they couldn't understand why he would be interested in an older woman.

For me abby's looks and all weren't the problem but 16 years of difference- that's a lot. But that's me, I don't this big age gaps. And more than that, I am upset and I guess maybe even angry because of the way she left Buck. She could have said something or told him! I totally get her going on self discovery but doesn't justifies in the very least leaving Buck hanging in there, leaving him with hope. I have a lot more words to so but for now I think that's enough. Most upsetting thing wasn't the age gap, it was how she left him with hope. I really wished in S3 finale when they talked on that on bench, Buck after saying "you deserve it" said to her that "but I didn't deserve that"
