Happy Juneteenth!

Juneteenth has been celebrated for years but it recently (as of June 17th) became a national holiday. Juneteenth honors the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans especially the enslaved in Texas (and other southern states) who unfortunately didn't get told in 1863 that they were free. It wasn't until 1865 that the enslaved Black people in Texas were free and that was due to 2,000 union troops going to the state to free those who should have already been freed. This holiday is about celebrating freedom and the continued fight for all aspects of it.

How are you celebrating Juneteenth? To learn more about the historical legacy of the holiday, visit the National Museum of African-American History & Culture.
