1. Go Through Your Products
First, take out all of your products from your bathroom, makeup bag, purse, etc. and place then on a table or counter. Then look at what you have. Don't start sorting and discarding just yet. By looking at your stuff first it gives you a chance to really look at all the colors and textures especially with your makeup.
Next, start grouping your products by categories or types of product (shampoos, conditioners, concealer, nail polish, etc.). Now you can start sorting and going through your stuff. If you haven't picked up let alone used a product in over year, you might want to let it go. Because it's siting there collecting dust instead of being used. Place those items in the discard pile real quick and try not to worry too much about letting them go. Don't start overthinking about how much money you spent on a product because if you start doing that you will talk yourself out of getting rid of something you clearly have not been using.
This is a great time to be honest with yourself about your stuff. If you look at your products and see anything that's had a change in texture, color or is starting to smell that's an easy way of knowing that a product is no longer any good. If your nail polish has separated even after you've shook it, it's a good time to get rid of it. That way you can find new colors to wear. Don't forget to check the expiration date on products. So if there is anything that is way past it's expiration date, it should go. As for going through the rest of your products if there is anything that's dried out, separated or smelly it should go.
Once you've gotten rid of all the old and unused stuff now it's time to organize what's left.
2. Organize
Now that you've gone through your stuff, it's time to organize it. Store each category: skin care, hair care and makeup in it's own area. This makes it easier to find what you're looking for. If you have a lot of makeup, a good idea is to separate the products and store them in clear containers. It makes it easy to see what you have. Just remember that some products that contain active ingredients such as retinol and vitamin C, should be stored in a cool, dry place and away from sunlight. So, maybe consider keeping those items in a dark spot such as a drawer.
I've been committed to keeping my products organized. Because sorting through your stuff and organizing it isn't just about quality or vanity but about hygiene. You don't want old products sitting around, they could have bacteria growing in them that I'm sure you don't want anywhere near your body. So try to go through your products as often as possible.
