Character Health & Fitness: Craig (9-1-1)

I think it's important to be as healthy as we can but I don't think anyone should feel pressure to do extreme things such as working out to the point they injure themselves trying to attain a certain look or weight. I feel like there is this pressure in our society to get "in shape" instead of being healthy. Which at times have some overexerting themselves in order to get "in shape".

Which brings me to my Character Health & Fitness post, in the 9-1-1 fifth season fifth episode Peer Pressure there was this guy Craig who was constantly seeing the commercials and ads for the workout mirror Narcissus. It's supposed to help you become the "more perfect you" and become "a Greek God". So of course he eventually bought one.

Craig was thin but he was willowy and led a very sedentary life while also eating a lot of unhealthy food. He wanted the muscular "Greek God" look the product was touting. However, instead of taking it slow, he went to the extreme and over exercised which included doing 300 sit-ups (and without using an exercise mat). And to no surprise Craig ended up injuring himself to the point he had to seek emergency medical help.

After firefighters Henrietta "Hen" Wilson and Edmundo "Eddie" Diaz checked him over, Hen realized Craig had a severely pinched nerve in his neck. It caused him to not be able to move while he was in the process of using the bathroom leaving him stuck bent over sitting on the toilet waiting for help to arrive. Below is a quote from the episode that's just so spot-on.

Hen: Do you feel any pressure?

Craig: So much pressure. I just wanted to get fit like everybody else, but I never thought it would kill me.

Hen: N-No, like pressure from my touch.

Craig: Oh. Yeah, I can feel that.

Bobby: Craig, have you been working out a lot? Is this something new?

Craig: I-I just got the Narcissus. The exercise mirror out there.

Eddie: There's a mirror called Narcissus?

Hen: Feels like someone didn't read to the end of that story.

~ Henrietta "Hen" Wilson, Craig, Robert "Bobby" Nash and Edmnundo "Eddie" Diaz, 9-1-1 season 5 episode 5: Peer Pressure

As he was being carried out to the ambulance, he told Hen he had learned his lesson in regards to overexertion. After she told him "no more crazy workouts to fit in". However, once he noticed how in shape Eddie and Evan "Buck" Buckley were, he immediately asked what kind of workout they did. So, yeah, despite ending up in a painful and embarrassing situation, I think Craig will end up in need of emergency medical care again. Because he still feels that pressure to get the "perfect" body and will most likely continue to go to extremes to attain it.

So, the point is, don't feel pressure to go to extremes to get in shape. You don't want to end up like Craig or worse, so think moderation and striving for good health.
