My Thoughts on Eddie Diaz's Cheating Storyline (9-1-1)

After watching last night's new episode of 9-1-1 this morning, I just had all these thoughts about Edmundo "Eddie" Diaz cheating with his dead wife Shannon's look-a-like that I had to post it. Maybe my thoughts will change as the story moves along but for now it made no sense for Eddie to cheat. This season really feels like they don't know what to do with the characters and Eddie has being written in the worst way so far.

(9-1-1 season 7 episode 7: Ghost of a Second chance)

What is the 9-1-1 writers fascination with cheating storylines? In season one, Michael Grant cheated on his wife Athena. It was right after he finally revealed he was gay to their children. After their daughter May attempted suicide and was taken to the hospital, he showed up with his date. I don't recall the cheating being mentioned again, however, Michael continued to date. Athena, ready to move on filed for divorce. Also in the first season, Henrietta "Hen" Wilson cheated on her wife Dr. Karen Wilson with her ex-girlfriend Eva Mathis. Although she only cheated one time, this would bring countless problems for the Wilson family in seasons 1-6. From Eva trying to seek custody of Hen and Karen's son Denny (who is Eva's biological son that they adopted) to Denny's biological father undermining their agreement in regards to meeting Denny.

The cheating storylines continued in the fifth season with Evan "Buck" Buckley cheating on his girlfriend Taylor Kelly. He was out at the bar with other firefighters celebrating a successful rescue when firefighter Lucy Donato kissed him and he kissed her back. This cheating storyline would hover over the second half of the season with a poorly crafted love triangle that thankfully fizzled out. In the sixth season, the writers had a long opening for an emergency in the episode Crash & Learn (season 6 episode 2) that follows as a wife was cheating on her husband with the neighbor. So, now in the seventh season, Eddie is cheating on his girlfriend Marisol with Kim the look-a-like of his dead wife Shannon. And he is lying to both his son Christopher and his best friend Evan "Buck" Buckley about where he's going so that Buck watches Christopher. Eddie's relationship with Marisol is boring and horrible but he should have ended things with her before starting something with his dead wife's look-a-like.

Cheating stories are just lazy writing. Are you telling me the only way they could figure out for Eddie to realize he has to deal with his late wife Shannon still haunting his life is by having him cheat on his girlfriend. And not only that by having him date his late wife's look-a-like. All throughout this seventh season, Eddie has been so out of character and this latest storyline is really going to hurt his character. Because there is a subset of 9-1-1 fans that hate Eddie no matter what as well as hate the Buck and Eddie ship (or Buddie). And now making Eddie cheat is just added fuel for them to continue to hate on the character.

Although Buck cheated on his girlfriend back in the fifth season, many of those Eddie hating fans brushed Buck's cheating under the rug. However, I don't think Eddie is going to get that same leniency with some fans. So far, this just feels like a bad storyline. I'm glad Eddie is getting more screen time but why this cheating story?

I'm really tired of the writers constantly bringing Shannon into Eddie and Christopher's stories after she died in the second season. I know grief effected both of them hard but the writers never let them truly deal with it. So, if this cheating story doesn't truly end with Eddie finally learning to let go of Shannon then this is just a terrible storyline. I really hope Chris doesn't see or meet this Shannon look-a-like because I could see him being hurt and confused as well as disappointed in his father for seeing this woman. So, yes, I'm hoping this story will be beneficial for Eddie and Christopher's story and not just equate to cheap and lazy writing.
