Fandom Thoughts #3: Henrietta and Dr. Karen Wilson's Repetitive Storyline (9-1-1)

Henrietta "Hen" and Dr. Karen Wilson are both an interesting couple and characters. I really wish the Showrunner and writers for 9-1-1 would let them have more happy moments. Their story is so often filled with trauma, drama and repetitive storylines.

Karen and Hen have been trying for so long to add a second child to their little family which includes their son Denny. To expand their family, they did In Vitro Fertilization in the third season. However, that didn't work out for them. So, they made the decision to become foster parents. They thought they had an opportunity to adopt Nia especially since they cared for the little girl for over a year. However, that also didn't work out for them with Nia being returned to her mother.

This was a vey emotional situation for Hen and Karen. But due to a little bit of investigating, Hen and Karen found out that Nia's mother Evangeline Gonzalez had lost Nia because they had become homeless and were living in Evangeline's car. But once Evangeline was able to get her life back on track, Nia was returned to her. Hen and Karen only investigated because they were worried Nia was going back to a bad situation. But it turned out it wasn't, her mom just fell on a bit of hard luck. But she turned it around and was able to get her daughter back. And by the end of both the fourth and fifth season finales, Nia and Evangeline were included in two touching Wilson family moments.

Edit to add: I forgot that in the sixth season finale Pay It Forward, Hen and Karen were going to adopt a baby girl. And in the seventh season, yet again it didn't work out for them. They continued to be foster parents but it wasn't until the seventh season that Hen and Karen thought they had yet again another chance to adopt another child, Mara Driskell. Initially, when they started fostering Mara they quickly realized she was a traumatized little girl. But due to them being caring, understanding and finding different ways to help her, she was able to relax and enjoy being a kid. However, yet again it didn't work out for Hen and Karen. And this time due to vindictive politician Olivia Ortiz. She made it not only impossible for Karen and Hen to adopt Mara but for them to continue being foster parents. Add to this was this experience of Mara having to leave a family and home that she finally felt was going to be hers which was even more trauma piled on for the little girl.

I wonder if the writers for the seventh season finale All Fall Down probably thought it was sweet and wonderful that Maddie Buckley and Howard "Chimney" Han became foster parents so that Mara can stay with them. That is until hopefully Hen and Karen can get everything sorted and get Mara back. But it wasn't a sweet ending not when Hen and Karen could have ended the season getting Mara back. That really would have been a sweet moment. So, yeah it's beyond time for Hen and Karen to catch a break and get off this repetitive storyline.

I can't help wondering, if there wasn't another way for the writers to ensure that the politician seeking her revenge (unwarranted by the way) was able to do that but without having to traumatize and separate Mara and the Wilson family. Hopefully, this storyline will finally be resolved in the upcoming eighth season. And it will let the Wilson family get the chance to be happy and enjoy adding a new member to their family. The writers really need to balance the dramatic and happy moments for Hen and Karen and the Wilson family because it continues to be way too many sad and dramatic moments for them.
