Denise: Really? Then what does your empty desk mean, Millie?
~ Millicent "Millie" (no last name) and Denise Huxtable, A Different World season 1 episode 12: Advise and Descent
I don't know why Denise Huxtable accepted the volunteer job of peer counselor during finals week in the A Different World episode Advise and Descent (season 1 episode 12) when she had a big paper due. It goes without saying that finals week is tough, you're intensively studying or working hard to complete that last paper or report. It's a lot. Although, Denise was helping her fellow students deal with the stress of finals week, she was limiting her time to finish her paper. In a way, it also felt like she was subconsciously using being a peer counselor as a way to procrastinate. It reminds me of when you know you need to study or work on something important but then you start focusing on something else that is until you go back to focusing on your studies.
I posted this quote because it's funny but also shows how stressed Denise was. When Millie made that cluttered desk comment, she probably thought she had made a fun little comment that was slightly critical (and insulting). And Denise definitely heard the insult which is why she threw that comment right back at her. It was clear to see that Denise was frazzled and stressed as she walked into the counseling center with an arm full of stuff that she placed down on the desk. No doubt about it, she was stressed, not only had she been so focused on being a peer counselor, she somehow lost a day in which she needed that extra time to finish her paper.
Of course, she eventually finished her paper by the end of the episode but Denise put herself through all of that stress. I guess the moral of the story is, to make sure your paper is done or close to being done before agreeing to be a peer counselor during finals week. Or manage your time better so that you can be a peer counselor but also don't miss a day and feel even more stressed out trying to get your paper done.
