Fandom Friday: Random Fandom Thoughts #53: 9-1-1 and Laufey

Happy Friday, here are two Fandom Thoughts that have been on my mind:

- It's starting to feel like 9-1-1 might be ending because the show is doing that telltale sign of adding in a kid in the later seasons of the show. It's usually to boost ratings and it's very noticeable how they are already overhyping and focusing so much attention on this new kid being added to the show. Because why is the only thing the showrunner and actors have been doing in the press is hyping up the Evan "Buck" Buckley and sperm donor kid Theo's storyline for the upcoming 10th season. Not to mention the social media accounts have been doing the same thing with overly promoting the kid.

This is a show about first responders dealing with various emergencies and the only thing that seemed to be focused on for the 10th season is this kid and Buck fostering him (until he most likely adopts him). Of course, the show isn't all about emergencies because fans love the show because it also focuses on the main characters and telling their stories. However lately, the writers haven't been doing a good job of balancing the stories and some characters are barely getting any screentime or good stories. And with the new kid they are acting as if this is the first kid to be on this show.

Where was this focus and energy on all the other kids that were added to this show. Why is this kid getting all this attention? When the other kids on the show didn't? And I just know Theo is going to get more screentime than the other kids because he's connected to Buck and as a Buck fan I will admit he already gets a lot of screentime. Meanwhile, Maddie and Howard "Chimney" Han just had a second child at the end of the eighth season and yet baby Robert Han and his big sister Jee-Yun barely get any attention on the show. Not to mention Henrietta "Hen" and Dr. Karen Wilson's two kids Denny and Mara are barely shown as well as Edmundo "Eddie" Diaz's son Christopher. When a show starts focusing all the attention on a new kid then it truly feels like the show is at an end. That's so disappointing when there are still so many interesting stories to tell but it looks like the Showrunner and writers are lacking any good ideas. It really feels like they have run out of ideas if this is the only thing they are excited about.

This is starting to make me think about when the TV series The Brady Bunch added Cousin Oliver to the show to most likely boost ratings but it did the opposite. To this day, that character is still unpopular and very much hated. And within the 9-1-1 fandom, Theo is already a divisive character because of the way they killed off his parents so that Buck could get him. Especially when Buck was only the sperm donor and not the dad. So here's hoping this new kid doesn't turn into the new Cousin Oliver.

According to the Showrunner, they only added Theo so that Buck would have "someone new to love". You know someone that Buck could have loved was Eddie while also realizing he already had a family with Eddie and Chris. Then later they could have added on a second child to expand their family. Buck and Eddie being together romantically is a storyline that fans have constantly been asking for but the Showrunner and writers have been avoiding it like the plague. Instead they continue to bait fans with the possibility. If they can put May Grant and Ravi Panikkar together when they never had any scenes or conversations together prior to the episode they got together. Then they could have easily put Buck and Eddie together who had years of meaningful connections while the other two had minutes of connections before getting together. Buck and Eddie being together has so much potential for storylines because with them working together would this new dynamic change things? It's something that could be explored, if only the writers wanted to.

This situation with Theo also reminds me of another show, Gilmore Girls when the show brought in Luke Danes' daughter April as a way to break up his relationship with Loreali Gilmore. The April storyline was nothing more than a way to ruining a fan favorite relationship all so that Loreali could date and marry Christopher Hayden. Thankfully, Loreali's relationship with Christopher didn't work out and eventually her and Luke got back together in the series finale. Putting Buck and Eddie together in the series finale really feels like something 9-1-1's Showrunner and writers would do. However, I doubt the show would get a four episode revival so that we could see Eddie and Buck get married like with the Gilmore Girls' revival.

- If it wasn't for actor Hudson Williams being in the singer and musician Laufey's video "Madwoman" I would have never found a new favorite singer. I truly never heard of Laufey until then but I'm glad I do now. She has such an amazing voice that has this retro feel to it. I'm not much of a jazz fan but I like her take on the genre. As someone who loves to listen to classical or instrumental music, I love that she also has instrumental versions of her albums and songs. I enjoyed listening to her music, I bought the deluxe versions of her first album "Everything I Know About Love" and her third album "A Matter of Time". I'm also going to get the deluxe version of her second album "Bewitched". I just love when I find something new (or new to me).
