Book Review: Long Macchiatos and Monsters

Book: Long Macchiatos and Monsters by Alison Evans

Source: Borrowed from Publisher/NetGalley for an honest review

Publication: January 28, 2015

Description:

Jalen, lover of B-grade sci-fi movies, meets the far-too-handsome P in a cafe while deciding whether or not to skip uni again. When P invites them along to a double feature of Robot Monster and Cat Women of the Moon, Jalen can hardly believe that hot boys like bad sci-fi, too. But as their relationship progresses, Jalen realizes P leaves him wondering if they're on the same page about what dating means, and if that's what they're doing.

Review:

Why do I keep finding all of these insta-love books are they just that popular that they're pretty much popping up so frequently in books now of days. It wouldn't be a huge problem if the story was even remotely interesting. This was okay and maybe not the best story but I did like the beginning and that both of the main characters love bad sci-fi movies. It's just that the story didn't really have a plot.

Long Macchiatos and Monsters is set in Australia is about college student Jalen who just so happens to be a huge fan of crappy sci-fi movies (think syfy channel quality). And one day while Jalen was sitting in a cafĂ© waiting out the rain before going to class, in walks P (he doesn't like his name and just goes by that initial) who is planning on going to the local theatre that shows old sci-fi movies and asked Jalen to meet him there.

P is a transgender man while Jalen feel as if his identity is somewhere in the middle and not sure if he wants to have surgery or not. Both Jalen and P have also had accidents in their past that resulted in them both losing a limb (P) and few fingers (Jalen) which adds to their connection in a way.

I found the writing, story and characters to not be very interesting. This was a little boring but again I did like that both characters liked sci-fi movies. However, I couldn't get a good sense of who these characters really were other than the fact that they were really into each other. P is a mystery to not only the reader but also to Jalen but I guess if this wasn't a short story then the mystery would be solved to some extent and the reader would find out more about him.

Short story or not this just wasn't that great.
