Book Review: Harry's First Christmas and Other Tales

Book: Harry's First Christmas and Other Tales by G. Norman Lippert

Review:

Merlin's Gift: A Founders Christmas Story

Rating: 4 stars

I thought the author did a really good job with this story. It was whimsical and funny. I love that other fairy tales were incorporated in this story with the belief that perhaps the founders are the reason for them being known about.

The story centered on the four founders of Hogwart's Witchcraft and Wizardry: Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff as they try to figure out what to do for this year's Christmas festivities. However, Merlin showed up with a mission for the four. They were to save the life of witch before eleven that evening.

The mission came from a King Kreagle who is supposed to have died many years ago. I simply love the ending when the reader find out the truth of the King.

Harry's First Christmas: A Marauders Christmas Story

Rating: 4 stars

This was a nice yet slightly sad story because unbeknownst to Harry this would be his only Christmas with his parents. It was funny at times but it had this underlining sadness throughout.

The story mainly focused on James and Lily Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew as they celebrate Christmas along  with a few cameos from Severus Snape, Voldemort and a slightly out of character Lucius Malfoy.

I thought the author wrote a rather good internal monologue for Peter Pettigrew and Lily Potter.

Petra's Getaway: A James Potter Christmas Story

Rating: 1 star

This story ties in to the second James Potter book (James Potter and the Curse of the Gatekeeper) and although I did not read that story (nor have any desire to) I found that it wasn't hard to follow, it was just boring. Out of all the three stories this was my least favorite, it wasn't as interesting and engaging as the other two stories.

The story focused on the author's original character Petra Morganstern, a Hogwarts student who was in the first James Potter book, as she celebrated her Christmas in Hogsmeade. With cameo appearances from James and Albus Potter, Rose Weasley and Teddy Lupin (who dated Petra in the first James Potter book, and later in the story he met her in Hogsmeade).

I didn't find this story to be very interesting nor the characters. The best part was Teddy's talk with Petra about family and life. But overall I was bored with this story.
