Review:
This started out really dreary especially with nothing going right for main character 11 (going on 12) years old Rebecca Carter or Bex as her friends call her. She's teased by the other kids at her school (mainly by the mean girls the Avas) for being bigger than the rest of the kids her age and as the only girl in the sports program at the school for gifted students. She's considered a loser and even though she has three good friends, they're considered losers as well. Bex and her friends are constantly being treated mean by their equally mean teacher Ms. Wabler. Even her friends can be a bit inconsiderate and mean to her at times, which I didn't really like.
School wasn't the only place Bex was mistreated. Her mean Aunt Jeanie (who thankfully she doesn't live with) never seems to have one nice word for Bex. I'm surprised her Aunt Jeanie even included Bex in the joint birthday party with her triplet cousins who are younger than her. Oh and Becca's mother left her and her younger sister Reagan with their grandmother and her father is in jail.
I feel sorry for this girl because she's always being accused of doing things she didn't do or having all the blame placed on her. What a life and who would want it? I can see why she made the wish for the fairies on her birthday. She was looking for something happy in her life.
I would say that it wasn't until the fairies showed up that this story started to become more interesting and lighthearted. It nearly became a Did Not Finish, because I started to get tired of reading about how poorly Bex was being treated. So, by the time the fairies showed up the story started to improve especially with the humor (which this book needed or it would be too dreary read especially for a children's book).
Although most of the wishes the fairies made didn't turn out so well, but when they worked they were perfect such as when Ava G. (one the mean girls) said some really awful things to Bex, Bex's fairy Maize caused her to make really loud burping sounds.
Sad to say, even the fairies couldn't cheer up this dreary story. This is one of the most depressing books I've read in a long time. There were some funny moments but certainly not enough. You would think a book that had fairies wouldn't be so sad and dreary and none of the main characters are even remotely likeable except for Bex's Aunt Alice and her teacher Ms. Garrett.
Lastly, the ending felt like a real let down. I don't know why I was hoping for something better from this sad and dreary book but it's as if the ending was something thought of at the last minute. This book was a total disappointment.
