Book: Green Lantern volume #1: Sinestro (issues #1-6) by Geoff Johns with illustrations (issues #1-5) by Doug Mahnke and illustrations for issue #6 by Mike Choi
Rating: 4 1/2 stars
Review:
I read the single issues and not the trade edition shown.
I thought this was really good. There was only one issue I had with this book, it was a bit unclear why Hal Jordan wasn't a Green Lantern anymore.
In the first six issues, Sinestro as a newly reinstated Green Lantern traveled back to his home planet of Korugar and seen the people of his planet being enslaved by members of the Yellow Lanterns (the Sinestro Corps). Figuring he needed a little assistance, he traveled to Earth to find a down on his luck Hal Jordan and sort of gives Hal a GL ring but with a few conditions attached to it. The conditions include that the ring is controlled by Sinestro and the power of the ring can never hurt or harm him.
With those provisions instated (as well as a few disagreement or two) the Sinestro and Hal set off to free the people of Korugar. It was interesting to see Sinestro fight for something that didn't benefit himself.
But while all this was going on the Guardians are up to something, they are planning on trying to create another group of guardians that will replace the Green Lanterns. It will be interesting to see how this will play out in future issues.
Despite this being the new 52, the reboot doesn't seem to have made too many changes to this series which truly is a good thing. I'm glad Carol Ferris was still in this and she wasn't out of character. Hal is having a hard time dealing with the fact that he's no longer a GL and having to figure out how to deal with life on Earth. I highly doubt this will last long but it's an interesting take on the series.
I really look forward to reading the second volume. So far the Green Lantern series have surprised me with how good they are in the new 52.
