Book Review: Dorothy Must Die

Book: Dorothy Must Die (Dorothy Must Die book #1) by Danielle Paige

Source: Library

Rating: 1 star (Did Not Finish)

Description:

I didn't ask for any of this. I didn't ask to be some kind of hero.
But when your whole life gets swept up by a tornado—taking you with it—you have no choice but to go along, you know?

Sure, I've read the books. I've seen the movies. I know the song about the rainbow and the happy little blue birds. But I never expected Oz to look like this. To be a place where Good Witches can't be trusted, Wicked Witches may just be the good guys, and winged monkeys can be executed for acts of rebellion. There's still the yellow brick road, though—but even that's crumbling.

What happened?

Dorothy. They say she found a way to come back to Oz. They say she seized power and the power went to her head. And now no one is safe.

My name is Amy Gumm—and I'm the other girl from Kansas.
I've been recruited by the Revolutionary Order of the Wicked.
I've been trained to fight.
And I have a mission:

Remove the Tin Woodman's heart.
Steal the Scarecrow's brain.
Take the Lion's courage.

Then and only then—Dorothy must die!

Review:

I'm really disappointed because Dorothy Must Die is another over hyped boring and poorly written book. And yet again, it's on the bestsellers list. Note to self: Bestsellers List Does Not = Amazing Book. All it means is that a lot of people bought the book.

I was expecting it to be a more darker take on the original The Wizard of Oz story but I wasn't expecting it to be so boring and uninteresting that I would want to stop reading. There was nothing creative or imaginative about this story.

The concept was unique but the story and the writing are awful. I mean really, really bad.

The story follows Amy Gumm who lives with her mom in a trailer park and is a loner who is teased and bullied at school. Why does it seem like this is the only type of character that a lot of writers only seem to create lately. The archetype who is the sad loner who somehow will turn into the one and only person who can save or stop something or someone.

So while Amy's life is sad and horrible, all of that changed when thanks to a tornado she wound up in Oz. This poorly constructed story takes on Amy's journey as she follows the yellow brick road of course after being rescued by a strange boy.

To me this book was a total miss because the story had so much potential but the bad writing, slow pacing and shallow and dimwitted characters doesn't make for an interesting story. It's hard to believe that the writing can seem both lazy and forced. Why does it feel like the author was just making it up as the story went along? There was no point to this story and nothing seemed thought out at all.

I will end my review by saying this was just a ridiculous story that used The Wizard of Oz as a gimmick. This was a horrible re-imagining of the tale and the best thing about it was the cover.
