Comic Book News: New 52 Batgirl Gets a New Creative Team

I must have been super busy to not have heard that Gail Simone will be leaving Batgirl to pursue a new comic book series for DC Comics.

Starting in October, Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher with artist Babs Tarr will be the new creative team for the series. They plan to revamp the series and give Batgirl a new costume.

Why does Barbara look like she's a teenager instead of being in her twenties? I guess I will have to get used to the artwork but it looks too juvenile and manga/anime like for me. I hope this is just promotional art and not how Batgirl will be drawn for the series.

This new take makes me wonder if DC Comics is trying to appeal to little girls and teenagers especially with this art.

According to an MTV Interview (conducted by e-mail) with the new creative team, Cameron Stewart said that: Just prior to the start of our story she’s pushed to the breaking point and decides that she’s had it with misery and darkness and wants a change. She wants the opportunity to have some fun and live the life of a young, single girl in the city, so she packs up and moves to Burnside, the cool, trendy borough of Gotham, to focus on grad school.

And here is Brenden Fletcher's take on the new Batgirl: Our take on Batgirl mixes the best elements of “Veronica Mars” and “Girls,” with a dash of “Sherlock” thrown in for good measure.

Veronica Mars...maybe, Sherlock Holmes...yes but Girls...ugh, that show is not anything I would want to associate Barbara Gordon/Batgirl with. That show is just awful.

Oh boy! I'm starting to get that same trepidation I had when the new creative team was announced for Wonder Woman. All of these things would have been great for Stephanie Brown's Batgirl series but they feel all wrong for Barbara's series.

And lets not forget Babs Tarr, she plans on bringing "some flirt, fun, and fashion to the title". Yeah, that's so amazing (sarcasm).

I guess this will be DC Comics attempt to appeal to more female readers but will this new take on Batgirl drive out some of the current readers? Many are already objecting to how young the character looks.

I really hope this new take on Batgirl will be good. I will have to wait and read the new issue to see.

Below is the information for the upcoming 35th issue of Batgirl:
