Superman's red cape is nearly as iconic as he is and even with the changes to his suit for the New 52, DC Comics weren't foolish enough to get rid of that cape. It's bright and bold and makes him stand out among the other superheroes (well, the ones who are not part of the Super family).
And unless you're a magician or Cosplaying is your full-time job, you really can't walk around wearing a bright red cape. It's not very practical.
