Rating: 1 star (Did Not Finish)
Review:
This was a Did Not Finish, it read like bad fanfiction. I really couldn't get into the story, besides being boring, shallow and predictable, it was a little bit sexist. 16 year-old Iris Maria Bently is the first ever female witch hunter because generally only the men have the witch hunter gene. Iris always knew she was different and could see things that no one else could but instead of her father letting her join the family witch hunting business, she was instead told she was crazy and even spent time in the psych ward. Yeah, now that's an awesome father.
But after stopping a witch from attacking a high school student and taking the body back to her father, he couldn't deny her claims any more. She was finally able to become a witch hunter but even then she was treated like she doesn't belong or doesn't know what she's doing.
I had so many problems with this story:
1) It started off in a haphazard way.
2) There's too much telling and not enough showing.
3) There is no character development and Iris as a main character is really whiny and annoying.
4) The third point-of-view makes the story feel disconnected from the characters.
5) There was no plot, the story was going in no clear direction.
6) Lack of world building.
7) The horrible dialogue.
8) Another clichéd love triangle.
9) There was nothing engaging about the story or the characters.
10) An undercurrent of sexism.
This was a disappointing read. However, one thing I will commend the author for is the diversity among the characters but other than that this could have been so much better.
