The play for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been getting a lot of good buzz which makes me wonder if that's the reason it's being turned into the official eighth Harry Potter book.
According to Pottermore, print and digital editions of the play will be published simultaneously after the play’s world premiere this summer. It will be comprised of the version of the play script at the time of the play’s preview performances. The Special Rehearsal Edition of the script book will later be replaced by a Definitive Collector’s Edition.
Pottermore also states that 2017 will see the publication of four special editions of the first book Harry Potter and the Philospher's Stone in the UK, it will be published for each of the four Hogwarts houses. There will also be a brand new edition of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, with new content by J.K. Rowling, as well as new formats and editions of the Hogwarts Library books – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages and The Tales of Beedle the Bard.
Book: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child - Parts I and II (Special Rehearsal Edition): The Official Script Book (Harry Potter book #8) by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany
Publication: July 31, 2016
Description:
Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, a new play by Jack Thorne, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter series and the first official Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.
While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.
