K.C. Undercover: A Fun Show That's Underrated

With so many teen shows that are grim and dark, I find it refreshing that Disney's K.C. Undercover is a fun show to watch. What I like is that the show is smart and funny without it being goofy or dumb down. Approaching it's third season, the show which is set in Washington, D.C., is an action-adventure comedy series. It follows the Coopers, a family of spies working for the Organization which is the U.S. Federal Civilian and Government Intelligence Agency that focus on providing federal espionage services.

Although the show centers around K.C. Cooper (Zendeya) an over-achieving, butt kicking high school student, the other members of the family also get a good amount of screen time. From her parents Craig (Kadeem Hardison) and Kira (Tammy Townsend) to her younger brother Ernie (Kamil McFadden) and their robot Judy (Trinitee Stokes) who masquerades as the family's youngest daughter. Even K.C.'s best friend Marissa (Veronica Dunne) sometimes find herself in the middle of the action, however that's mainly by accident.

K.C. is fiercely bright, driven, confident and a fun character who despite the spy elements of the show feels like a normal teen. She might be an overachiever but she's not perfect, K.C. makes plenty of mistakes. She worries about trying to handle everything going on in her life while still being there for her family and friends. She finds romance and sometimes it with an annoying teen spy, Brett (Ross Butler) in the first season or with a popular athlete Darrien (Chris Tavarez) who she had no intention of falling for in the second season.

When it comes to doing her job some of her missions are with her family but the test of her skills are when she goes on solo missions. There have been a lot of really good story arcs in this series such as in the first season with the Coopers being targeted by Zane, Craig's former spy partner who still held a grudge and planed to enact his revenge. While the second season brought a family secret into play with the return of Kira's older sister Erica King (Jasmine Guy) who is an ex-member of the evil organization, the Other Side.

K.C. Undercover is a funny and exciting show that I feel is very underrated and wished it received as much attention as the other teen shows. The show is both comical and suspenseful with K.C. trying to tackle being a spy and being a typical teen. I think there is room in TV for a lighthearted teen show among the dramatic and grim ones.

Anyone who might be interested in watching K.C. Undercover, the Disney channel re-airs the first two seasons (not necessarily in order) weekly but the series can also be found on hulu.
