1. Stacking Books on the Floor
I know there is a lot of controversy about stacking books on the floor but it is one of the easiest ways to store books if you don't have a bookcase. I wouldn't necessarily put a bunch of hardcovers on the floor but I don't see a problem using this method for storing paperbacks. And make sure not to place them on the floor anywhere there is direct sunlight because that's one of the quickest ways to ruin a book.
2. Dresser or Cabinet
Storing books in a cabinet or dresser is a great way to repurpose old furniture or if it's in your budget you can buy something new. This is also a good option for someone who wants to reduce visual clutter by not storing books out in the open.
3. Under the Bed or Bench
Placing books under the bed or bench is a great place to store them. I would recommend taking a picture of the spines of each stack of books you place under the bed in case you forget which ones you stored there. So instead of having to pull out each book you can look at the pictures to find what you are looking for.
4. Crates or Boxes
With crates and boxes you can safely store your books and keep them from dust and damage. Depending on how you stack them, you can use the crates or boxes to display different items such as plants, collectibles and artwork.
5. Coffee Table
The coffee table is a great place to display your bigger books such as art of books, fashion books and photography books. But if you can't fathom the idea of someone looking through your reference or collectible books perhaps you can instead showcase some of your older paperbacks.
6. On a Cart
The benefit of storing books on a cart is that you can move it around. You can also use it as a way to group some of your To-Read books together for easy access. Then you won't have to go around your home trying to find the books when you're ready to read them.
