Why did Rory Gilmore let Mitchum Huntzberger's Opinion Get to Her?

I still get mad whenever I think about how Rory Gilmore let Logan's father Mitchum Huntzberger nearly ruin her dream of being a journalist.

Something that annoyed me about the fifth season episode "I'm a Gilmore" is when Rory attended dinner at the Huntzbergers, Logan's mother and grandfather went out of their way to let her know that she wasn't good enough for Logan nor would she not be able to understand what it takes to be in the Huntzberger family. Although Rory and her mother Lorelai lived modestly, they were accustomed to high society since Rory's grandparents Richard and Emily Gilmore are very wealthy and prominent members who run in the same social circles as the Huntzbergers. However, that meant nothing in regards to the Huntzbergers opinion of Rory who they felt was not right for Logan. As a way to compensate for making her feel bad, Logan's father tried to smooth things over by offering Rory an internship at his newly acquired newspaper, the Stamford Eagle Gazette.

Rory initially had turned down the internship but Mr. Huntzberger convinced her it was too good of an opportunity to pass up, so she accepted. Despite the first day of her internship not going very well (she was nervous), she eventually turned it around and fully excelled at her job. She worked hard and had the newsroom running smoothly and she was really happy and thriving in this journalistic environment. All seemed to be going well until she received her evaluation from Mr. Huntzberger. He told Rory she didn’t have what it takes to be a journalist and added that she would make a good assistant instead.

Yes, it's hard to hear negative criticism but I was so surprised that she actually believed him. She let everything he told her get inside her head which caused her to lose her confidence. Who cares if Mr. Huntzberger is a big deal in the world of journalism, it doesn't mean his opinion should have mattered so much to her. Even her extremely optimistic mother Lorelai couldn't snap Rory out of her funk. His criticism of her wormed his way into her thoughts making her second guess her dream of being a journalist and had her deciding not to go back to college. I really couldn't believe it.

The first half of the sixth season, she wallowed in defeat while living in her grandparents' pool house making no attempt to go back to school. I don't know why she didn't brush off Mr. Huntzberger's comment and continued following her dream, instead she let his comments cause her to temporarily give up on her dream. She does eventually go back to college but she should have never taken a break or temporarily dropped out in the first place.

In the seventh (and finale season), Mr. Huntzberger does change his opinion of Rory but by then I felt like Rory had finally grew into a much stronger person and no longer let his or anyone else's opinions affect her again.
