Review:

Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil follows Billy Batson, a homeless child, who lives in an abandoned building. When he's not spending time with his only friend Talky, a homeless old man, he is doing his best to avoid Lagreen, a thief who is trying to get what little money Billy has.

When Billy followed what he believed to be his father down a subway station, he got on a mysterious train which stopped at a strange location, a cave. Inside the monstrous cave were large statues and an old wizard. The wizard thought Billy would make a good hero and once the little boy spoke a magic word he would get powers and would turn into Captain Marvel.

Despite receiving this amazing gift, Billy life didn't change that much, he was still homeless and trying to avoid Lagreen but now he had the ability to help others and protect himself. Captain Marvel was going to be needed more than ever when he has to deal with Mr. Mind, his giant robots and his Monster Society of Evil. To make matters worse the Attorney General, Dr. Sivana was hatching an evil plan that would put Billy's younger sister Mary in a dangerous situation.

Billy really is a good kid who is always trying to help others and was given powers to be a protector on a larger scale. Without meaning to, Billy accidentally made it possible for Mr. Mind to invade Earth but with help and reassurance from his friend Mr. "Talky" Tawny, he was determined to fix his mistake and not to mention save his little sister. He got some additional help from TV reporter Helen Fidelity, who at first wasn't that nice to Billy but the chance of a big story about Dr. Sivana had her interested in wanting to help both Billy and Captain Marvel.

I'm happy I picked this to be the first book for the Comic Book Club because Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil was a fun and exciting story. There's action and adventure, an alien, a villain, talking animals and monsters, talking insects, siblings reuniting and so much more.
