This was so ridiculous because not only was the hospital super busy but they brought the rat to her in what looks like a carry out food container in a bag. Melissa was hoping that they had been very thoughtful and brought her dinner but no it was a dead rat in a box. She was not happy and definitely didn't have time for examining a dead rat and told them to leave. Of all the places, they could have taken the rat to, the hospital wasn't one of them. But if they had to go to the hospital, bothering a busy Melissa McCall was something they should have avoided. To get the dead rat examined, they could have asked Liam's stepfather Dr. Geyer who also worked at the hospital (and the writers seemed to have forgotten he exist). Since he didn't know about the supernatural nor that his son was a werewolf, they probably would have had to lie about their reasons for wanting the rat examined.
They could have taken the initiative and examined the rat themselves (especially since Mason is really smart) in their school's biology classroom (of course after school). They could have also "borrowed" a microscope and examined the rat at one of their homes or they could have taken it to Beacon Hills Animal Clinic where their friend Dr. Alan Deaton, a veterinarian who knows about the supernatural, could have examined the rat. The writers must have also forgotten Dr. Deaton existed but I guess for this story having Mason and Liam at the hospital was convenient in furthering the plot. However, it still made absolutely no sense that they took a dead rat to Mrs. McCall.
