On Teen Wolf, Why would Mason Hewitt and Liam Dunbar take a rat to Melissa McCall?

I was thinking back to the Teen Wolf episode "Said the Spider to the Fly" where Mason Hewitt and Liam Dunbar took one of the numerous dead rats that was found in the tunnels under their high school to the Beacon Hills Memorial Hospital to see if Melissa McCall, who is a nurse, could possibly examine it. They already found out from their friend and pack mate Malia Tate, who is a were-coyote, that the rats died of fear but I guess they wanted additional information.

This was so ridiculous because not only was the hospital super busy but they brought the rat to her in what looks like a carry out food container in a bag. Melissa was hoping that they had been very thoughtful and brought her dinner but no it was a dead rat in a box. She was not happy and definitely didn't have time for examining a dead rat and told them to leave. Of all the places, they could have taken the rat to, the hospital wasn't one of them. But if they had to go to the hospital, bothering a busy Melissa McCall was something they should have avoided. To get the dead rat examined, they could have asked Liam's stepfather Dr. Geyer who also worked at the hospital (and the writers seemed to have forgotten he exist). Since he didn't know about the supernatural nor that his son was a werewolf, they probably would have had to lie about their reasons for wanting the rat examined.

They could have taken the initiative and examined the rat themselves (especially since Mason is really smart) in their school's biology classroom (of course after school). They could have also "borrowed" a microscope and examined the rat at one of their homes or they could have taken it to Beacon Hills Animal Clinic where their friend Dr. Alan Deaton, a veterinarian who knows about the supernatural, could have examined the rat. The writers must have also forgotten Dr. Deaton existed but I guess for this story having Mason and Liam at the hospital was convenient in furthering the plot. However, it still made absolutely no sense that they took a dead rat to Mrs. McCall.

Book Nerd Problems: People Tearing Pages from Reference Books

A Book Nerd Problem that truly annoy me is when someone rips out the pages of a book especially if it's a reference book. Since not every bit of information can be found online sometimes you have to go to the library. And after searching through the reference books and finally finding the book you were looking for only to find out that the pages with the information you need have been torn out. Is so annoying.

I don't know how many times that happened to me while I was in college but it was enough times that it was really irritating. Because not only did I not get the information I was looking for, I had to let one of the librarians know about the damaged book so they can reorder it, if possible. Because sometimes really old books can't be reordered.

Anyway, it's so infuriating which is why I can totally relate to Mason Hewitt's expression in Teen Wolf's 5th season 11th episode "The Last Chimera". In that scene, Mason was left speechless after his best friend Liam Dunbar tore a page from a reference book before they left their high school library. The look on his face pretty much conveyed that he couldn't believe Liam would do such a horrible thing. He actually stood there for a few seconds not saying anything as he tried to process what just happened.

Mason is one of my favorite characters but the fact that he's definitely a book nerd who can appreciate leaving reference books intact pretty much keeps him at the top of my list.
